What

The Campus Bird Count is a sub-event of the larger Great Backyard Bird Count. It is a coordinated effort to document the birdlife in multiple campuses across India. By “campus”, we include campuses of educational and training institutions, government institutions, research stations, corporate campuses, etc. Broadly speaking, any moderate to large sized area where people study, work or live.

Why

Outside protected areas, campuses in India often contain surprisingly large amounts of important habitat for birds and other wildlife, even in urban areas. Documenting this wildlife is therefore important and it’s also fun and relatively easy!

When

16-19 February 2018

How

Try and get a group of bird enthusiasts (from within or even outside your campus), and organize yourselves in such a way that you cover all different areas and habitats that your campus contains. The protocol is quite flexible: basically you would walk around, and collect as many 15-minute ‘complete’ lists as possible. In other words, each 15 min list should contain all species detected in that time period. Upload these lists to eBird, just as the general protocol for GBBC describes.

Last year, 2017, 187 campuses from 23 States took part in the CBC, documenting 455 species.

The Outcome

Uploading your lists to your campus’s ‘hotspot will automatically generate a comprehensive list of all species reported from there. (See, for example, the Wildlife Institute of India campus hotspot). In addition, you will be able to calculate the relative common-ness of different species on your campus, based on the frequency of observation.

If you are Interested

Please register so that we can include your campus in the list below. Before you register, please check if your campus has an existing hotspot on eBird. If so, please include the link to the hotspot in the registration form; if not please set one up and let us know so that we can set this up before the GBBC/CBC starts. Please get in touch with your GBBC State Coordinators if you have any questions, or post on the Facebook event page.

So sorry for missing this comment. We should have the Campus Bird Count results out by first week of April. They are a bit complicated to produce!
