Rongali Bihu

Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year celebrated in April. It marks the onset of the Assamese agricultural calendar and the spring season. The festival is characterized by traditional folk dances, feasting, and cultural performances, creating a vibrant and joyful atmosphere. It’s a time when communities come together to celebrate the renewal of life and the promise of a bountiful harvest. This is also the time of the year when summer is setting in, and birds all around you will be busy with breeding activities. The season sets a foot to the summer migratory ones, and flourishes with birds such as Asian Koel, which are relatively inconspicuous in other seasons. Thus, BBC aims to celebrate Rongali Bihu by documenting the wide variety of birds, particularly those that breed in Assam. Moreover, pairing this event with the festivals that have an essence of reverence for nature, lies with a hope of influencing people from a broad spectrum of backgrounds to promote indulgence in knowing about the common birds and the migratory ones around human habitation.
