The Assamese month of Kati marks a significant period for rice seedling transplantation, a crucial agricultural practice. Kati Bihu, celebrated in Assam during October, is a vital regional festival. During this time, farmers engage in traditional practices like lighting lamps in their crop fields, seeking divine blessings for a bountiful harvest as the Kati month begins. The festival is also called Kongali (Poor), which is meant to represent an empty granary and less food at that time of year. Unlike many other flamboyant Indian festivals, Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, is more solemn in its observance.

This month also holds a special significance for bird enthusiasts. It heralds the arrival of migratory birds from various parts of the world, including the observance of several passage migrants. In recognition of this natural phenomenon, Assam Bird Monitoring Network in association with BCI initiated the Kati Bihu Bird Count. This  initiative aims to document the rich avifauna diversity in the region and raise awareness about the importance of birds in our ecosystem. By connecting the festival with nature, the initiative seeks to promote an understanding of the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
