Bihu Bird Count (BBC), are bird monitoring events initiated in January 2020 by the birders in Assam under the banner of the Assam Bird Monitoring Network (ABMN) in association with Bird Count India.
Bihu, the primary festival of Assam is celebrated thrice in a year and hence Bihu Bird Count also celebrated triannually to monitor the bird diversity.
- Magh or Bhogali Bihu Bird Count (January)
- Rongali or Bohag Bihu Bird Count (April)
- Kati or Kongali Bihu Bird Count (October)
Magh Bihu
Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu, is a significant festival in Assam celebrated in January, marking the end of the harvest season. It’s a time of joy and gratitude, with communities coming together to celebrate the abundance of the harvest through traditional feasts, bonfires, and cultural activities.
Magh Bihu also holds a unique association with migratory birds. During this time, Assam welcomes the arrival of various migratory bird species, adding to the festive spirit. Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers use this occasion to engage in birdwatching, observing these winged visitors that have traveled from distant lands. The harmonious coexistence of the festival and the natural world underscores the deep connection between Assam’s cultural heritage and its rich biodiversity. In recognition of this natural phenomenon, Assam Bird Monitoring Network in association with BCI initiated the Magh Bihu Bird Count. This initiative aims to document the rich avifauna diversity in the region and raise awareness about the importance of birds in our ecosystem. By connecting the festival with nature, the initiative seeks to promote an understanding of the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
