Executive Summary

  • Bird atlas surveys nearly completed for seven districts. Barring Kollam, majority of the subcells of the remaining districts have also been completed. Project on track.
  • Forest bird survey strategy to cover PAs has been a resounding success.
  • Team work in completing Idukki non-forests by partnering with several districts is commendable.
  • Kottayam Bird Atlas surveys 100% completed – joins as the fourth district with 100% completion.
  • Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) churn analysis of eBird users suggest that more eBirders who participated in GBBC are now sticking to eBirding. We continue the strategy of targeted promotion of the event vs general press statement.
  • Fourteen panchayat posters released in November 2018 by honourable Forest Minister of Kerala.

Key Decisions – Overall

  • Wet Season Atlas Dates – 18 July – 15 September
  • Bird Atlas Wet Season surveys will extend to 2020 – due to loss of time during the 2018 floods.
  • Dry season strategy to prioritise PA surveys (above RF surveys) shall be followed.
  • Wet season survey will have two distinct phases – difficult subcells will be visited only in September.
  • Idukki hill forest strategy that was tried in dry season shall be followed in wet season as well.
  • Heronry survey shall be between 15 June to 15 July. A new google form will be used on a trial basis.
  • AWC lists that have not been shared with AWC Kerala to be shared by coordinators/birdwatchers.
  • Create more video based material for explain eBird data quality and data entry concepts
  • Extend long term monitoring to two more districts in 2019-2020 – Kasaragod (existing), Palakkad and Ernakulam

Key Decisions – Women in Birding

  • Promote birding everywhere – that does not require travel to a particular site but do birding in one’s own compound/area.
  • Women benefit from group birding more than men. Each district group/NGOs should start more group birding activities that will encourage female participants to join.
  • Reach out to organisations that are lady-centric (e.g. Kudumbashree) – where presenting this topic would instill passion in birding.
  • NGOs or Informal groups should ensure that there is adequate representation of ladies at the helm of activities – as leaders and icons.
  • Lady teachers (College & School) has a great role to play in nurturing the younger generation to birding.
