BEACHCOMBING FOR SHOREBIRDS: A SURVEY OF THE BIRDS IN MIGRATION TO THE KERALA COAST

The State of Kerala has a long coastline of 590 km with several beaches of fishing and tourism interest. But together with the din and bustle of these beaches, arising out of fishing or tourism activities, several migratory birds make these beaches their seasonal home. Out of the 14 districts in the state, 9 districts have beaches with coastline ranging from 37 to 82 km. Much of the bird activities here go unnoticed and we have only scanty knowledge about the bird diversity of the coasts, the movement patterns or the factors of preference and threats faced by these migratory birds. A survey is being conducted to bring some focus on the vanishing shorebirds and their habitat and work towards mitigation. The objectives of the survey is to record and prepare a baseline data of the diversity and population of the migratory birds of the coastal region, the migration pattern of the birds, and other aspects like the preferences and problems confronted by the birds.

The Kerala Beachcombing is a systematic survey to study the shorebirds of the entire coastline of the state involving citizens from all walks of life like the beginners, amateurs and senior birders. The survey shall be conducted across multiple years by monitoring birds every month between August to March, with a single day and time fixed in every month to cover the major beaches in the Kerala state. Teams of two or more members survey the beaches from 7 to 9 a.m. every month and will upload their observations to eBird.

മൽസ്യബന്ധനവും വിനോദസഞ്ചാരവും പ്രധാന പ്രവർത്തന മേഖലയായിട്ടുള്ള 600 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം കടൽത്തീരമാണ് കേരളസംസ്ഥാനത്തിനുള്ളത്. മൽസ്യബന്ധനത്തോടും വിനോദസഞ്ചാരത്തോടും ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ശബ്ദകോലാഹലങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം വലിയ ബഹളമൊന്നുമുണ്ടാക്കാതെ ഈ തീരങ്ങൾ തങ്ങളുടെ ശൈത്യകാലവസതിയാക്കുന്ന വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന ധാരാളം പക്ഷിവർഗങ്ങൾ കേരളത്തിലെത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. പതിനാല് ജില്ലകളുള്ളത്തിൽ ഒൻപതു ജില്ലകളിലും 37 മുതൽ 82 കിലോമീറ്റർ നീളത്തിൽ കടലിന്റെ സാമീപ്യമുണ്ട്. അവിടെ വരുന്ന പക്ഷികളുടെ വൈവിധ്യത്തെപ്പറ്റിയും അവയുടെ സഞ്ചാരരീതികളെക്കുറിച്ചും അവ നേരിടുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചും ഇപ്പോഴും നമുക്ക്‌ വളരെ കുറച്ചുമാത്രമേ അറിവുള്ളു. തീരപക്ഷികളുടെ എണ്ണത്തിൽ വരുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും അവയുടെ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ വരുന്ന ശോഷണത്തെയും ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി പരിശോധിക്കുകയും ഈ ഭീഷണികളെ കുറക്കുന്നതിന് പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയുമാണ് ഈ സർവെ പ്രാഥമികമായി ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കുന്നത്.

കേരളത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ കടൽത്തീരങ്ങളിലുമെത്തുന്ന ദേശാടകരായ തീരപക്ഷികളെ പറ്റിയുള്ള ഒരു അടിസ്ഥാന വിവരരേഖ, ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ മേഖലയിലുമുള്ള ആൾക്കാരെയും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി സിറ്റിസൺ ശാസ്ത്ര രീതിയിലൂടെ തയ്യാറാക്കുകയാണ് ഈ സർവെ ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ലോഞ്ചിറ്റൂഡിനൽ മാതൃകയിൽ തുടർച്ചയായ വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ആഗസ്റ്റ് മാസം മുതൽ മാർച്ച് മാസം വരെ നീണ്ട് നിൽക്കുന്ന, മാസത്തിൽ ഒരു ദിവസം എന്ന കണക്കിൽ നിശ്ചിതസമയത്തിൽ കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ പ്രധാന കടൽതീരങ്ങളേയും ബൃഹത്തായ ഈ സർവെ വിധേയമാക്കുന്നു.

Protocol

Teams shall visit their selected beaches on the same day
The same team shall visit the same beach in the subsequent months as far as possible
May combine small and adjacent beaches together and rename and number the beach accordingly
ONE complete (travel/stationary) eBird checklist of ONE HOUR anytime between 7 and 9 a.m
Additional checklists may be added as time permits
Enter the location number and name in the Location field of eBird checklist
Enter any other observations like; nature of the seashore, tide, threats, weather etc in the comments box
Enter the name with initials of all the participants in the comments box
