a. The White-browed Wagtail is a widespread resident across most of the Indian subcontinent.
b. The White-browed Wagtail inhabits wetland habitats in both urban, rural and wild areas. Unlike its congeners, it is a remarkable songster and has one of the more beautiful songs that one can hear around our wetlands.
c. The White-browed Wagtail, the largest of wagtails, has a distinctive white brow. It’s scientific name, Motacilla maderaspatensis is derived from the city of Chennai (erstwhile ‘Madras’). It is also known as “dhobin” in Hindi (meaning washerwoman) and “Vanaathi kuruvi” (meaning washerwoman’s friend) in Tamil, referring to the bird’s habit of frequenting the “ghats” and steps where people would wash their clothes. The eye refers to its alternate name of “khanjan”, which derives from “Khanjan-eyed” meaning “one with beautiful eyes”.
