Red-breasted & Taiga Flycatcher

Red-breasted Flycatcher (Ficedula parva) and Taiga Flycatcher (Ficedula albicilla) are two very similar flycatchers with white sides to their tails. Once considered the same species, both species together breed across the Eurasian taiga from Western Europe to East Asia.

Red-breasted Flycatcher breeds west of Central Asia and winters largely in the Indian Subcontinent except in the northeastern parts.

Taiga Flycatcher breeds east of Central Asia and winters throughout the Indian Subcontinent but are most abundant in Northeast India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia.

Migration map

This animated migration map was created from observations uploaded to the citizen science platform eBird up until 2020. Where present, the inset graph depicts the seasonal likelihood of finding this species (i.e. the proportion of eBird checklists) within its range in India alone. We are grateful to the many birdwatchers around the world who have enabled the creation of this animation by sharing their observations on eBird.
