Oriental Pratincole

Oriental Pratincole (Glareola maldivarum) is a truly remarkable migrant that breeds in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia and migrates all the way to Australia for the winter!

This phenomenon was discovered only in 2019 when an Oriental Pratincole that was Satellite tagged in Australia flew through Thailand and Orissa to finally settle down and breed in northern Karnataka. Some birds appear to spend the winter in India as well. Other species that make migratory flights from India to Australia are White-throated Needletail and Curlew Sandpiper.

Migration map

This animated migration map was created from observations uploaded to the citizen science platform eBird up until 2020. Where present, the inset graph depicts the seasonal likelihood of finding this species (i.e. the proportion of eBird checklists) within its range in India alone. We are grateful to the many birdwatchers around the world who have enabled the creation of this animation by sharing their observations on eBird.
