Campus Bird Count 2018 – Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Andaman Avians Club successfully completed the Campus Bird Count 2018. This year’s bird count was a great success, as we received a wonderful response from various campuses. Adding to last year, 4 new campuses were included for our bird count – thus taking the total to 8 campuses. It was really nice to witness both the students as well as the faculty of various campuses participating in the count.
The 4-day Campus Bird Count gave us a number of moments that we would cherish. 9 new members joined our club. On Day 2, the team birder at the IRBN campus for the first time, where a flock of 300 Lesser Whistling Ducks greeted them. On Day 3 in CARI, we recorded more than 35 species of birds which is very high compared to last year. Nocturnal birding at ANET was a different experience altogether – searching for owls in the dark was really exciting. A lot of endemics were also spotted during the bird count. In short, the 4-day event was an absolute bird fest and was experienced and celebrated with great enthusiasm by all the participants and the Andaman Avians Club team.

this activity is attracting more and more young people , they learn the importance of protecting environment and life of other animal. I am retired forest officer, naturally wild life and environment protection is my passion. My son is an Army officer. They have large campuses with lots of trees which support birds and other animals. Where ever I go , I prepare list of birds and give it to the concerned officer to be kept in record and also request them to conduct census in ensuing.
