Do you study, work or live on a campus of some form? Are you interested in birds? If so, the GBBC Campus Bird Count is for you!
[Skip below to participating campuses]
What: The Campus Bird Count is a coordinated effort to document the birdlife in multiple campuses across India. By “campus”, we include campuses of educational and training institutions of any kind, government institutions of any kind, research stations, corporate campuses, and so on. Broadly speaking, any moderate to large sized area where people study, work or live.
Why: Outside protected areas like national parks, sanctuaries and reserved forests, campuses in India often contain surprisingly large amounts of important habitat for birds and other wildlife, even in urban areas. Documenting this wildlife is therefore important — and it’s also fun and relatively easy!
When: This is a sub-event of the larger Great Backyard Bird Count, and so coincides with the GBBC: 13-16 Feb 2015.
How: Try and get a group of bird enthusiasts (from within or even outside your campus), and organize yourselves in such a way that you cover all different areas and habitats that your campus contains. The protocol is quite flexible: basically you would walk around, and collect as many 15-minute ‘complete’ lists as possible. In other words, each 15 min list should contain all species detected in that time period. Upload these lists to eBird, just as the general protocol for GBBC describes.
The Outcome: Uploading your lists to your campus’s ‘hotspot’ (see below) will automatically generate a comprehensive list of all species reported from there. (See for example, the hotspot of the Wildlife Institute of India campus). In addition, you will be able to calculate the relative common-ness of different species on your campus, based on the frequency of observation.
If you are Interested: No formal registration is required, but if you intend to conduct this event on your campus, please drop us a line (birdcountindia@gmail.com) so that we can add your campus to the list below. Also, check if your campus has an existing hotspot on eBird, and if not, please let us know so that we can set this up before the GBBC starts.
Do remember that the GBBC runs over four days, so there is plenty of time to explore other interesting habitats outside your campus too!!

Hello Ma’am. Yes, that can be considered a campus too! Since a fair number of ‘campuses’ of different kinds are joining for this, perhaps we will separate them into categories. May we publish your email address in the contact details for your campus?
Please add Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi University (South Campus) too!
Certainly! May I list you as the contact person, with your email address too? And will this be carried out within the SV College campus, or across the larger South Campus of DU?
I’d prefer you list me as well as my friend Shakti (lifescience617@gmail.com) in case of any unforeseen circumstances (plus he’s more regular in checking his mail 😀 ) Dunno about S.Campus. Recently, their regulations have become slightly strict and sometimes it’s difficult to stay inside their campus long enough, so it’s definitely SVC and probably S.Campus but we’re not a 100% sure.
Thanks,
Bornika
please include NATIONAL CENTER FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (NCBS), Bangalore.
