After training as a bird guide, the eagerness to learn more has made Abdhesh an excellent birdwatcher. Being a private teacher and having a deep affection for the environment and wildlife, he actively engages in various birding workshops and information-sharing sessions. These experiences have not only shaped him into a skilled teacher but also a seasoned and skilled birder.

1. आप हमें अपने बारे में कुछ बतायें. आप क्या करते हैं और कहाँ रहते हैं?
1. Please tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do and where do you live?

मैं अबधेश कुमार आदर्श, एक शिक्षक होने के साथ मैं जमुई वन प्रमंडल के अंतर्गत बर्ड गाइड और स्वयंसेवी के रूप में कार्यरत हूँ। पर्यटक जिनकी जानकारी मुझे विभाग या निजी तौर पर मिलती है उन्हें मैं पक्षियों को देखने और उनके बारे में जानकारी मुहैया कराने और इस क्षेत्र की सांस्कृतिक महत्व आदि से रूबरू कराने का प्रयास करता हूँ जबकि एक शिक्षक के रूप में शिक्षा से वंचित रहे बच्चों को अपने घर पर ट्यूशन के माध्यम से पढ़ाई से जोड़ रहा हूँ और उन्हें पर्यवारण संरक्षण हेतु जागरूक करने का प्रयास कर रहा हूँ। चूँकि मेरा गाँव जमुई जिले में स्थित नागी पक्षी अभयारण्य व नकटी पक्षी अभयारण्य के बहुत नजदीक है इसलिए खूबसूरत पक्षियों से मेरा राब्ता बना रहता है और मुझे जब भी मौका मिलता था तो मैं पक्षी देखने निकल पड़ता हूँ, पक्षियों के बीच होना बहुत ही आनन्दमय पल होता है।

I am Abdhesh Kumar Adarsh. Besides being a teacher, I am also a bird guide with Jamui Forest Division and work as a volunteer. I try to see birds and provide information about them and the cultural importance of this area to tourists whose information I get from the department or personally.

As a teacher, I am connecting with children who are deprived of education by offering tuition at my home and trying to raise awareness about environmental protection. Since my village is very near to Nagi–Nakti Bird Sanctuaries located in Jamui district, I frequently come into contact with beautiful birds. Whenever I have the chance, I take delight in observing and learning more about these magnificent creatures.

2. आपने पक्षियों को देखना या बर्डिंग करना कब और कैसे शुरु किया?
2. When and how did you get interested in birding?

मैं बेज़ुबान वन्यजीवों एवं पक्षियों से बचपन से ही प्रेम करता हूँ। मेरी दादी माँ जीव हत्या और उनपर अत्याचार के प्रति विरोध करती थी जिस देख मुझे प्रेरणा मिली है।
I have loved wild animals and birds since my childhood. My grandmother used to oppose the killing of animals and any act of cruelty committed against them, which inspired me.

3. आपका सबसे पसंदीदा पक्षी क्या है और क्यों?
3. Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

ऐसे तो मुझे सभी पक्षियां भाती हैं लेकिन Indian Roller जिसे हम स्थानीय भाषा में नीलकंठ कहते हैं को मैं इसमें शामिल करना चाहूंगा क्योंकि एक बार एक सन्त ने मुझे बताया था कि कोई शुभ कार्य करने से पहले या कहीं यात्रा करना हो और रास्ते में नीलकंठ पक्षी मिल जाए तो वह कार्य निश्चय ही सिध्द होगा।
As such, I like all birds, but I am particularly fond of the Indian Roller, which we call Neelkanth in the local language. This fondness stems from a saint’s advice, who once told me that if a Neelkanth bird is spotted on the way before undertaking any auspicious work or journey, it is believed that the work that you set out for will undoubtedly be successful.

4. क्या आप किसी साथी या ग्रुप के साथ बर्डिंग करना पसंद करते हैं? अकेले या किसी के साथ बर्डिंग करने में क्या फर्क है?
4. Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with? How is birding alone different from birding with others?

जिस क्षेत्र से मैं आता हूँ,उसी क्षेत्र में कई और बर्ड गाइड भी हैं जो मेरे बर्डवॉचिंग साथी भी हैं, इनके साथ होना मुझे पक्षियों के बारे में और जानने की इच्छा को बढ़ाता है और इसके माध्यम से एक-दूजे का ज्ञान वर्धन भी होता है। लेकिन कभी-कभी अकेले बर्डवॉचिंग करना ज्यादा भाता है इसलिए कि उस समय मैं शोरगुल और अन्य विघ्न से दूर रहकर अवलोकन कर पाता हूँ।
There are many other bird guides in the same area where I come from, and they are also my birdwatching companions. Being with them increases my desire to learn more about birds and, in turn, enhances our collective knowledge. However, sometimes birdwatching alone is more enjoyable because, during those moments, I can observe birds without any noise or other disturbances, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

5. आपका सबसे यादगार बर्डिंग अनुभव क्या है?
5. What is your most memorable birding experience?

साल 2022 के फरवरी में मैंने जमुई जिले में एशियन वाटर बर्ड काउंट (Asian Waterbird Census) में भाग लिया था जिसमे मुझे जिले के प्रमुख वेटलैंड में पक्षी गणना करने के लिए वन विभाग और पक्षी विशेषज्ञों से जुड़ने का मौका मिला था। इसी पक्षी गणना के दौरान हमनें सित टोपी थिरथीरा (White-capped Redstart) और सामान्य कारण्डव (Common Merganser) को पहली बार देखा था जो कि काफ़ी सुखद अनुभव था।
In February 2022, I had the opportunity to participate in the Asian Water Bird Count in Jamui district. I joined the Forest Department and a team of bird experts to conduct a bird count in the district’s major wetlands. During this event, we had the delightful experience of spotting the White-capped Redstart and the Common Merganser for the very first time. It was truly a pleasant and memorable experience.

6. भविष्य में बर्डिंग को लेकर क्या आपकी कोई इच्छा है? आप कोेई पक्षी देखना चाहते हों या किसी खास जगह पर बर्डिंग करना चाहते हों या पक्षियों से संबधित कोई घटना देखना चाहते हों?
6. Anything on the birding bucket list? (Doesn’t have to be a bird, could be a place, witnessing a phenomena, etc)

मैं पक्षी अवलोकन के माध्यम से पक्षियों के व्यवहार और कारक जो की उन्हें विलुप्तता की ओर लेकर जा रही है उन्हें समझ कर पक्षियों के संरक्षण में अपना योगदान देना ज्यादा जरूरी समझता हूँ। हमें ज्ञात हैं कि एक प्रजाति का किसी आवास से बिलुप्त होना सहविलुप्तता की ओर हमें ले जाएगा जिसका कुप्रभाव हमारे ऊपर भी पड़ेगा इसलिए हमें उस पक्षी के आवास को संरक्षित करने के लिए संयोजित प्रयास करने होंगे। जो पक्षी अधिक संकट से घिरे हैं मैं पक्षी के आवास के संरक्षण को अधिक प्राथमिकता दूंगा। मैं जिस क्षेत्र में कार्य कर रहा हूँ उस जगह पर वह प्रजातियां जो अब तक नही मिली है उन्हें खोजना और उनके बारे में अधिक जानने को हमेशा उत्साहित रहता हूँ। मैं आगामी पक्षी से संबंधित क्रियाकलापों में भाग लेना पसंद करूँगा और मौका मिलने पर अन्य क्षेत्र में पाए जाने वाली प्रजातियों को खंगालने और उन्हें डॉक्यूमेंट करने के लिए मौके की तलाश करूंगा।
I believe understanding bird behavior and the factors leading to their extinction through bird observation is vital for contributing to bird conservation. When a species goes extinct from a habitat, it can have adverse effects on us as well, so protecting their habitats becomes crucial. I prioritize conserving habitats that are more endangered. I am enthusiastic about discovering new species in my area of work and eager to participate in upcoming bird activities. Given the chance, I would explore and document species in other areas too.

7. आप दोनों में से किसका अधिक आनंद लेते हैं और क्यों ? (अ) आपके घर/स्थानीय क्षेत्रो/जिले के आसपास नियमित रूप से पक्षियों का अवलोकन करना या (ब) विभिन्न जिलों और राज्यों में विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में व्यापक रूप से पक्षियों का अवलोकन करना?
7. Which of the two do you enjoy more and why: a) regular birding around your house/local patch/district, or b) widespread birding in different landscapes across different districts and states?

मैं साल के अधिकांश समय अपने गृह जिला जमुई में ही होता हूँ इस कारण से भी मैं अपने आस पास के क्षेत्रों को एक्स्प्लोर (अन्वेषण ) करने को ज्यादा तबज्जो देता हूँ लेकिन जब भी दूसरे जिला या राज्य में यात्रा करता हूँ तब भी पक्षियों को देखना और उनके व्यवहार को समझने की कोशिश करता रहता हूँ।
Most of the year, I stay in my home district, Jamui, which is why I prefer exploring the areas nearby. However, whenever I travel to other districts or states, I make it a point to observe birds and learn about their behavior.

8. पिछले कुछ वर्षों में बर्डिंग के प्रति आपका दृष्टिकोण कैसे बदला है? आए बदलाव के बारे में बताए .
8. How has your approach to birding changed over the years?

यह हमारे लिए बहुत महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्न है क्योंकि इसी क्षेत्र में बिहार के दो सर्वोत्तम पक्षी-स्थल हैं- नागी और नकटी बांध पक्षी अभ्यारण्य।। मुझे पशु-पक्षियों से तो लगाव था लेकिन कुछ वर्ष पहले तक मुझे बर्डवॉचिंग के बारे जानकारी नही थी। हालांकि कभी कभार कैमरे में पक्षियों को कैद करते लोगो को देखता था लेकिन बर्ड गाइड के परिशिक्षण कार्यक्रम का आयोजन के बाद लोगो का नज़रिया बदला है। इसी बर्ड गाइड परिशिक्षण में मैं टॉप टेन में चौथा स्थान प्राप्त किया था। अब पक्षियां देखने हेतु पर्यटक हमसे खुद संपर्क कर रहे हैं। जब भी मुझे मौका मिलता है मैं पक्षी देखने दूरबीन लेकर निकल पड़ता हूँ । मेरे घर के पीछे नदी बहती है जो कि कई प्रजातियों का पर्यावास है।
This is a significant question for us because two of Bihar’s finest birding sites, Nagi and Nakti Dam Bird Sanctuary, are located in this area. I always had a fondness for animals and birds, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I discovered the joy of birdwatching. In the past, people were seen capturing birds on camera, but after conducting bird guide training programs, attitudes have changed. I was fortunate to secure the fourth position among the top ten participants in the bird guide training. Now, tourists reach out to us directly to witness the beauty of the birds.

Whenever I have the opportunity, I venture out for birdwatching armed with binoculars. There’s a river flowing behind my house, providing a habitat for many bird species.
