Events planned in 2019 for Pakshi Saptah
Here are a set of events and webinars planned by birders and birding groups in various districts of Maharashtra.
Since 2017, Maharashtra Pakshimitra has been celebrating Pakshi Saptah to commemorate the birthdays of two renowned ornithologists from India: Dr. Salim Ali (12 Nov) and Mr. Maruti Chitampalli (5 Nov). After overwhelming participation and enthusiastic response from bird lovers across Maharashtra, the tradition continues in its third year too. All are welcome to get introduced to the world of our feathered friends!

Summary of the events:
Bhandara-
Save Ecosystem and Tiger (SEAT) had organised bird watching and nature trail in the Tumsar forest range of Bhandara on the occasion of ‘Pakshi Saptah’. 51 students of the Dav Moil Public School along with their teachers participated in bird watching at Bhondki Lake, Chincholi. Mr. Tejas Parshionikar (President, SEAT), Mr. Swapnil Wankhede and Jude Pitcher led the group. Twenty-nine species were recorded, including Black Redstart, Black-hooded Oriole, Hoopoe, Indian Roller, White-throated Kingfisher, and Pied Kingfisher. Mr. Swan Bahekar, an honorary wildlife warden (Gondia) guided students about wildlife and conservation. Mr. R R Parteti (Round Officer), Mr. David Meshram (Forest Guard) and other forest department staff with members and volunteers of SEAT assisted in making this event successful and memorable for students. Mr. Tejas and Mr. Swapnil conducted an indoor session about documenting bird observations on eBird. They created a group account for the Moil Public School and uploaded their sightings on eBird website.

पक्षी सप्ताहाच्या निमित्याने बहार नेचर फाउंडेशनद्वारा पक्षी निरीक्षण, स्लाईड शो, वनस्पतींची ओळख, ईबर्ड डॉट ओआरजी यासंकेतस्थळारील नोंदी अश्या अनेक उपक्रमांचे आयोजन करण्यात आले होते. त्यातील पक्षी निरीक्षण प्रामुख्याने शेती, तलाव, औषधी उद्यान, स्मशानभूमी जवळील परिसर, टेकडी, महात्मा गांधीजींचा आश्रम परिसर अशा विविध प्रकारच्या अधिवासांमध्ये करण्यात आले. दरम्यान ७० हून अधिक पक्षी प्रजातींची नोंद ईबर्ड या संकेतस्थळावर नोंदविण्यात आली असून यात Common Hawk-Cuckoo, Common Cukoo, Pallid Harrier, Indian Golden Oriole, Sulphur-bellied Warbler, Jerdon’s Leafbird, Grey-bellied Cuckoo यांची नोंद झाली. पक्षी निरीक्षणामध्ये सेवानिवृत्त, निसर्गप्रेमी, शिक्षक व विद्यार्थ्यांनी मोठ्या प्रमाणात भाग घेतला होता.
पक्षी सप्ताहाचे उद्घाटन अरण्यऋषी मारुती चितमपल्ली यांनी वर्धा शहरपक्षी निलपंखाच्या माहिती फलकाचे अनावरणाने केली. पक्षी निरीक्षण व जंगल वाचनाचे सविस्तर नोंदी करून ठेवल्यास ते भविष्यात उपयुक्त ठरतात अशी माहिती त्यांनी दिली. मारुती चितमपल्ली हे जंगलाचे चालतेबोलते विद्यापीठ आहे असे मत वर्धा जिल्ह्याचे मानद वन्यजीव रक्षक संजय इंगळे तिगावकर यांनी मांडले. प्रदूषणाची तीव्रतेची जाणीव करून देत बहार नेचर फाउंडेशनचे अध्यक्ष किशोर वानखेडे यांनी पक्षी निरीक्षण करतांना व आठवड्यातील एक दिवस अधिकाधिक सायकलचा वापर करावा असे आवाहन केले.
पक्षी अभ्यासक राहुल वकारे, वैभव देशमुख व दिपक गुढेकर यांनी पक्षीसप्ताह दरम्यान केलेल्या पक्षी निरीक्षणाच्या नोंदी ईबर्ड डॉट ओआरजी या संकेतस्थळावर केल्या व उपस्थितांना ईबर्ड विषयी मार्गदर्शन केले.
पक्षी निरीक्षणाच्या दरम्यान अतुल शर्मा, डॉ. श्याम भुतडा, दिलीप वीरखडे, जयंत सबाने, राहुल वकारे, वैभव देशमुख, दिपक गुढेकर, सुषमा शर्मा यांनी नियोजित अधिवासात पक्षीनिरीक्षणाबद्दल सहयोग व मार्गदर्शन केले.
12 नोव्हेंबरला पक्षी सप्ताहाच्या महात्मा गांधी आश्रम परिसरामध्ये समारोपीय कार्यक्रमात पक्षी निरीक्षण, पक्षी प्रजातींच्या नोंदी, स्लाईड शोद्व्यारे पक्षी प्रजाती विषयी सविस्तर माहिती तसेच black-winged Stilt चा व्हिडीओ उपस्थित विध्यार्थ्यांना दाखविण्यात आला. सुषमा शर्मा यांच्या अध्यक्षीय भाषणाने कार्यक्रमाची सांगता झाली.
पक्षी सप्ताहाच्या निमित्याने आयोजित अश्या विविधअंगी कार्यक्रमाने पक्षी, निसर्ग, पर्यावरण संरक्षण व संवर्धनाविषयी जनजागृती उपस्थितांमध्ये रुजल्या गेली असेल, हे नाकारता येत नाही.

Nashik
Pakshimitra Saptah was celebrated in Nashik from 5th November to 12 November to commemorate the birthdays of two renowned ornithologists from India: Dr Salim Ali (12 Nov) and Mr Maruti Chitampalli (5 Nov). Events like bird watching, wildlife presentations, a workshop on Ebird and bird monitoring was arranged during the week. Organisations from Nashik like Pakshimitra Mandal, Nashik, Nature Conservation Society of Nashik, Forest Department, Echo-Eco took part in organising and their members attended the events. On the last day, on the birth anniversary of birdman of India – Dr Salim Ali, Pakshimitra Mandal, Nashik had organised an event at Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary.
The event was organised by Pakshimitra Mandal, Nashik. The event started with an elaborate birdwatching session at Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary from 8 am to 10 am. Where birdwatchers recorded 43 species of birds. Birds like Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Northern Pintail, Oriental Darter, Paddyfield Warbler Pheasant-tailed Jacana, etc were spotted. Birding was followed by the indoor session at Nandur Madhmeshwar information centre hall where following members presented their talks –
- Presentation by Mr Anil Mali on Life of Dr Salim Ali
- Experiences on Dr Salim Ali’s visit to Nandur and early days of Nandur shared by senior birdwatcher Mr Datta Ugaonkar
- Dr Prashant Wagh briefly explained his PhD work at Nandur.
- The program was concluded by President of Pakshimitra Mandal – Mr Madhukar Jagtap
Chandrapur–
Jungle Journey- a group of birders from Chandrapur celebrated the birth anniversary of the birdman of India Dr. Salim Ali a bit differently. A bird walk was conducted for the students of the military school at Mohorli village in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. The students of Sainik School Chandrapur experienced birding for 3 hours early in the morning. As it was their first experience of birding they were excited and now want to go birding again. They saw 35 to 40 different types of birds at the very first attempt. The team of Jungle Journey- Vandana Moon, Chitra Ingole, Vidya Chitriv, Saroj Dhawas, Vaishali Fulkar, and Arjun Varma were instrumental in giving this beautiful experience of bird watching to the students.
Nagpur-
Pakshi Saptah was celebrated with nature enthusiasts at Gorewada Lake, Nagpur. Tejas Parshionikar, young conservationists and birders from Nagpur conducted a bird walk with 20 nature enthusiasts from the city. Dipak Sawant, Director of Gorewada zoo of the international standard also extended his active participation. During the walk, a total of 53 bird species were observed. Waterbirds and woodland birds including winter visitors were recorded. Bird guides, Nilesh Mendhe and Sandip Bhalavi, of Gorewada Reserved Forest, also participated in bird watching.
