Desert Wheatear (Oenanthe deserti) and Pied Wheatear (Oenanthe pleschanka) are two similar species that breed in cold semi-desert habitat and winter in hot arid habitats in the tropics.
Desert Wheatear breeds in a parts of North Africa, the Arabian peninsula, Central Asia and throughout the Tibetan Plateau (Including Ladakh). Arid habitats in northern and western India form an important part of their winter range.
Pied Wheatear breeds in more mountainous semi-arid habitat adjacent to those preferred by Desert Wheatear in Central Asia eastwards to Mongolia including one edge of the Indian Himalayas. All populations migrate westwards and south through the Arabian Peninsula into northeastern Africa.
