Demoiselle Crane (Anthropoides virgo) breeds eastwards from Central Asia to Mongolia and winters almost entirely in western India.
It is an iconic species in Gujarat and Rajasthan where spectacular aggregations of tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of birds are seen. Just like Common Crane, Demoiselle Crane can also be heard and seen during migration when they pass through valleys of the Himalayas into the north Indian plains. Another bird for which we in India are the global custodians during winter!
