March 2025 eBirding Challenge

Congratulations to all for an immensely successful Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and Campus Bird Count (CBC)! This is India’s first GBBC were 1,084 bird species were recorded. We will soon be posting the Preliminary Results. Please upload your remaining GBBC lists by 10 March 2025.

March is a crucial time when many resident species begin their breeding activities, and winter migrants prepare for their long journey back to their breeding grounds. This month’s challenge focuses on tracking these seasonal shifts, with an emphasis on  1.documenting migratory waterbirds before they depart and 2. breeding activities of our resident birds.

The challenge for March is to:

  • Upload a minimum of 31 eligible* lists during March
  • Include at least two eligible lists from any waterbodies (wetlands, lakes, rivers, coastal areas)
  • Add the word “wetland” in your checklist comments for waterbody lists

Optional:

  • Use breeding codes in eBird for any observed breeding activity. Please note, F and H are not breeding codes.

* Eligible checklists are those that report ALL species seen/heard (and are therefore marked ‘complete’), includes counts for all species numbers (no ‘X’ entries) and are of at least 15 minutes or longer in duration.

Please upload all your March eBird lists by 10 April 2025 so that we can announce the results soon after that.

Here are the general rules of our monthly challenges. And check out the yearlong challenges for 2025 as well! You can keep track of fresh lists coming in from India on this page.

March 10 is the deadline for submitting any remaining GBBC checklists from February 14-17, and April 10 is the deadline for the March eBird challenge.
