The first Kerala Common Bird Monitoring Program (CBMP) was conducted on 14-17 Feb 2014, as part of the Green Partners Programme of the Kerala Forest Department (Social Forestry).
The basic activity in the CBMP is to observe birds for at least 15 min from wherever you are, and upload the species list with number of individuals, to the bird listing platform eBird. By doing so, you will not only generate valuable information on the distribution and abundance of birds of Kerala, but will also contribute to the global Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), which runs on identical dates. In addition, your lists from 16 Feb can also count towards the pan-Indian Big Bird Day, if you so choose (please mail [email protected] if you would like this).
If you are new to eBird and CBMP, please start by going through this guide to participating and subsequently uploading one or two bird lists of yours before the CBMP dates. If you have a smartphone, you may find the app (for iPhone and Android) BirdLog Asia (free until 17 Feb) useful for recording your lists and submitting them to eBird. A more comprehensive guide to using eBird is here.
CBMP is an opportunity to bring the joys or birding to the larger community around us. Those who are already skilled in birds are requested to introduce more beginners into birdwatching and contribute to CBMP. You can use this presentation (prepared by Abhinand, Naveen, Jolly & Vijesh with support of several photographers). The presentation can be used by you to conduct classes in schools, colleges, residential associations, offices – whichever is your immediate circle where you can influence. The slides have 100 birds – if you are introducing them to beginners, we would suggest you cut it down to 50-60 birds which are found in your locality to avoid a long lecture. This could be followed by a brief introduction to using eBird.
