Uttarakhand Bird Count

16 November - 17 November

Uttarakhand Bird Count 2024 Banner with Grey-headed Flycatcher
Let’s welcome winter by joining the Uttarakhand Bird Count 2024 on 16th and 17th November.

The primary goal of this event is to establish a dedicated annual bird count for Uttarakhand, bringing communities together to celebrate the state’s rich birdlife. This first edition of the event offers an exciting opportunity to explore the picturesque landscapes of Uttarakhand and observe its beautiful birdlife across plains, hills, Terai, and high mountains.

Mid-November is an interesting time for birds in the region, as altitudinal migrants descend to lower elevations and long-distance migrants arrive from far-off lands, joining resident species who are adapting to the presence of these new neighbours. By recording your bird observations, you’ll contribute important data on the distribution of these species. Your records will help us track changes over time and better understand how climate change is impacting Uttarakhand’s bird diversity.

How to participate in the Uttarakhand Bird Count?

  • Observe and count birds from anywhere in Uttarakhand for two days of the event—16 and 17 November 2024.
  • Upload your checklists through the eBird Mobile App or web interface.
  • Ensure that each list is of at least 15 minutes duration.
  • Try to make lists that are exactly 15 minutes for easy comparability between years.
  • All lists should be complete checklists with counts of all birds that you could identify by sight and/or sound to the best of your ability.
  • Use ‘Stationary’ or ‘Travelling’ protocol.

General Instructions

  • Visit various locations across the state to observe a wide range of bird species.
  • Instead of using “X” to mark species, try to estimate the number of individuals present.
  • Feel free to upload multiple checklists from the same location to capture variations in bird activity.
  • New to eBird? Watch this video to get started.
  • If you are birding in a Group, only one person should create the eBird list and then share it with the group. Learn how to share lists here.
  • For more eBird help videos, see Bird Count India’s YouTube channel.

Note: Please upload all your lists by 22 November, 2024.
