What The Pongal Bird Count, an initiative of the Tamil Birders Network, is an annual bird monitoring program for Tamil Nadu

When Pongal Bird Count (PBC) takes place on 14th – 17th January 2022.

How Go birding for at least 15 min, listing and counting all the species you see.

Please try to upload as many 15 minute lists into eBird (ebird.org/india) during the Pongal bird Count.

For Beginners in birding

It doesn’t matter if you can’t identify every single species — what you can identify is good enough! Login to ebird.org/content/india and submit your species list. See “Introduction to Birds and Birdwatching” slides below.

New to eBird?

For those new to eBird, see the brief description here, and do go through our beginner’s guide and make sure you create an account and start using eBird right away to get used to the platform. If you own a smartphone, you can create an account in eBird first and then find the eBird app for iPhone/Android users, install it and submit your bird list into eBird through that app. See here for more details.

Introduction to eBird

If you are a birdwatcher who has not tried eBird or have bird-watcher friends who are not using eBird, please use these slides as an introduction. You can find the Tamil version of the same presentation here (PDF & JPEG).

Introduction to Birds and Birdwatching If you are planning to coordinate a birding event during the Pongal Bird Count and would like to introduce college/school students and general public you can use this “An Introduction to Birds and Birdwatching” presentation from this page. In addition to that you can also use the following presentation “Some Common Birds of Tamil Nadu – A Bilingual Pictorial Guide” (PDF and JPEG).
