Campus Bird Count 2025

14 February - 17 February

The Outcome

Uploading your lists to your campus’s ‘hotspot will automatically generate a comprehensive list of all species reported from there. (For example, the Wildlife Institute of India is a campus hotspot). In addition, you will be able to calculate the relative commonness of different species on your campus, based on the frequency of observation.

To have your campus featured on the event page or included in the final results, filling this Campus Registration Form is required.

By completing the form, your campus will be listed alongside others on the event page, making it easier for fellow participants to find and join the walk.

Conducting the Bird Count

Step 1: Choose Your Campus Spot

  • Select any outdoor location on your campus where you’re comfortable observing birds.
  • This could be any space in your campus where there are some plants.

Step 2: Get Ready for Birdwatching

  • Choose a time when you can dedicate at least 15 minutes to birdwatching
  • Ensure you have your phone with the eBird Mobile App and Merlin Bird ID App downloaded and your regional ‘Bird Pack‘ installed
  • Binoculars are helpful, but not essential. Enthusiasm is key!

Step 3: Observe and Record Birds on Campus

  • Find your chosen spot on campus. You can either walk around the campus or stay at one place
  • Set a timer for at least 15 minutes
  • Open the eBird Mobile App and ‘Start’ a new checklist
  • Observe the birds around you and note every bird you spot, including their counts
  • Add all the birds that you can identify by sight or sound to the best of your ability in the eBird App
  • Don’t forget to include even the common birds like mynas, pigeons, and crows
  • If you’re unsure about a bird’s identity, you can take a photo or use the Merlin Bird ID app to help identify it

Step 4: Upload Your Observations

  • After your 15 minutes (or more) are up
  • Complete your checklist on the eBird app
  • While choosing location, ensure that you are choosing your eBird campus hotspot
  • Review to double-check your entries
  • Share eBird checklists with fellow eBirders who participated in the walk
  • Hit ‘Submit’

Here are some additional tips on how to participate in Campus Bird Count.

Please note:

  • If your participants are beginners or new to bird identification, encourage them to download the Merlin Bird ID App and install the relevant “Bird Pack.”
  • If your participants have already experienced watching birds and want to record numbers of birds, request that they use the eBird Mobile App to record their sightings.
