Birder Profile–Stanzin Chamba

Birder Profile is a monthly series from Bird Count India, where we connect with bird enthusiasts from across the country.

  • Please tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do and where do you live?

My name is Stanzin Chamba. I live in Leh, Ladakh. I’m a wildlife enthusiast, but especially passionate about birdwatching. I love hiking in remote areas because it allows me to connect with nature on a deeper level.

  • When and how did you get interested in birding?

I’ve been in the tourism industry since 2005, working as a trekking guide. In 2008, I met a Belgian family who were my clients for an eight-day trek. One of them was an avid birder, and we did some birding together during the trek. On the last day, he showed me pictures of the birds we’d seen, which was an eye-opening experience for me. It sparked a deep appreciation for nature within me.

  • Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

That’s a tough question! I find all birds beautiful in their own unique way. However, if I had to choose one, it would be the White-browed Tit-Warbler. The reason is their vibrant rainbow colors, and they’re also very special to me because I can find them near my house- playing hide-seek around my property.

  • Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with? How is birding alone different from birding with others?

Yes, I do, and I really enjoy birding in groups. Birding with others creates a different kind of energy. It’s always fun to be around like-minded people who share your passion. I’m a member of the Wildlife Conservation and Birds Club of Ladakh, one of the most popular birdwatching clubs in Ladakh. The club helps guide youngsters to become responsible birders and valuable contributors to bird conservation.

  • What is your most memorable birding experience?

I have many memorable moments while birding with friends. One that stands out is when we heard about the Red Crossbill, a bird rarely seen in Ladakh, being spotted far from Leh. Me and my friends- Padmya Gyalpo and Gurmet Stanba, decided to take a chance and plan a day trip. We traveled nearly 320 km round trip, crossing a high mountain pass, to reach the location. We were thrilled to find the bird and also got good photos of it. It was a fantastic day for all of us.

  • Anything on the birding bucket list? (Doesn’t have to be a bird, could be a place, witnessing a phenomena, etc)

There are just two birds left on my list of elusive birds in Ladakh. These are the Long-billed Bush Warbler (see article here) and Sillem’s Rosefinch, as their presence in the Ladakh area is uncommon. I hope to see these magnificent birds in their natural habitat someday.

  • Which of the two do you enjoy more and why: a) regular birding around your house/local patch/district, or b) widespread birding in different landscapes across different districts and states?

I enjoy birding in all habitats across my state and never miss an opportunity to do so. I have been regularly exploring new habitats in Ladakh and continue to do so. As for birding outside the state, I believe completing the Ladakh bird list and exploring its vast areas is a priority first.

  • How has your approach to birding changed over the years?

My approach hasn’t changed dramatically. I understand my birding habits and try to be responsible. With experience and guidance from my seniors, I’ve become more conscious and ethical in my birding practices. It’s important to conserve these beautiful creatures and their habitats.

  • Have you set any birding goals for the coming months?

I’d love to explore more birding areas around all of Leh Ladakh and add them to my list. As a birdwatching guide myself, I’ll do my best to show my clients their target bird species in the coming months. It’s important for me to stay active in the field.
