Birder Profile: Jadeswamy Madaiah

1. Please tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do and where do you live?

ನನ್ನ ಹೆಸರು ಎಂ ಜಡೇಸ್ವಾಮಿ. ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಸೋಲಿಗ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ.೧೦ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಉತ್ತೀರ್ಣನಾಗಿದ್ದು ಕಳೆದ ೯ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ .ಪರಿಸರ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಕನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನನ್ನ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ. ಬಂಡೀಪುರ ,ನಾಗರಹೊಳೆ , ಬಿಳಿಗಿರಿರಂಗನ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹಾಗು ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ಕೊಲ್ಲೂರು ರಿಸೆರ್ವೆ ಅರಣ್ಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅನುಭವ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನಾನು ಸಸ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಹಾಗು ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ಕನ್ನಡ , ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ .ಹಿಂದಿ ,ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸಲು ಶಕ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ . ೨೦೧೬ ರಿಂದ ಯಳಂದೂರು ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೀಸನ್ ವಾಚ್  ಒಬ್ಸರ್ವಷನ್ ಕ್ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಮಾಡುತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ Social media networks (facebook) ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

My name is M Jadeswamy. I am one among Chamarajnagar district’s Soliga tribal people. After having completed 10th standard, I have been an avid observer of nature. I am very interested in birds and animals in my area. I have worked earlier in several resorts in and around Bandipur, Nagarahole, BR Hills and one year in Kollur (Dakshina Kannada) as a naturalist. I am able to explain and talk about birds, animals and trees in English, Kannada and Hindi. Since 2015, I have begun working with the SeasonWatch programme, promoting nature education and monitoring of trees in several schools in Yelandur. Recently, I am able to contact several people and learn more about birds through social media such as Facebook. 

2. When and how did you get interested in birding?

ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಮುಂಚಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಆದರೆ ಅವುಗಳ ಹೆಸರು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್-ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದು ಬಂಡೀಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಖಾಸಗಿ ರೆಸಾರ್ಟ್ ಸೇರಿದ್ದಾಗ.

I have always been interested in birds, but I did not know their English names. Once I started working as a naturalist in a private resort, I was able to learn their English names as well.

3. Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

Orange Minivet ಮತ್ತು Black Eagle. Orange Minivet ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಪಕ್ಷಿ. ನಮ್ಮ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಬಹುದು. ರೀತಿ, Black Eagle ಒಂದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಪಕ್ಷಿ. ಸೋಲಿಗರು ಅದನ್ನು ಕಾನ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅದರ ಕಡುಕಪ್ಪು ಬಣ್ಣವನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Orange Minivet and Black Eagle are my favourite birds. Orange Minivet is a beautiful bird. We can see them easily in the forests of my district. Similarly, Black Eagle is also a special bird. Soliga people call it “darkness of thick forest” because of its jet-black colour.

4. Where do you enjoy birding the most?

ಬಿಳಿಗಿರಿರಂಗನ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಕಾಡು ನನಗೆ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಅತಿ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಜಾಗ. ಅದು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಬೆಲ್ಲತ್ತ ಜಲಾಶಯ.

I love birding in and around BR Hills forests. That apart, I also bird at Bellatha, a large waterbody at the foothills.

5. Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with? How is birding alone different from birding with others?

ಇದುವರೆಗೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ Prashanth, Kalyan Varma, Tanya Seshadri ಯವರ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಬಾರಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಬಹಳ ಖುಷಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Till now, I have not identified any birding group. Sometimes, I join Prashanth, Kalyan and Tanya.

6. Anything on the birding bucket list? (Doesn’t have to be a bird; it could be a place, witnessing a phenomena, etc)

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ರೀತಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯತೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನೋಡಲು ತುಂಬಾ  ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯಿದೆ. ಯಾವಾಗಾದರೂ ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಇಚ್ಛೆ.

Apart from Karnataka, I would like to see what different types of birds are there in other areas. One day, when I get the opportunity I would like to explore bird diversity in various other areas of the country.

7. Has eBird changed how you bird? How?

eBird ಬರುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈಗ ಒಂದು notebook ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಏನೇ ನೋಡಿದರೂ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಬಾರಿ ನೋಡಿದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಗುರುತಿನ ನಿಯಮಗಳು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, larks ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಮನ ಇಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. Bird Count ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು blog ನೋಡಿ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತಿಳಿದುಬಂದಿದೆ.

Before eBird, I would not write anything about what I watched. Now I have a notebook for bird records. Whatever I see, I write. Sometimes, I get questions about what I reported and this helps improve my bird identification. For example, I would not pay too much attention to larks. After seeing a blog on Bird Count, I have learnt more about them.

8. Have you set any birding/eBirding goals for the coming months?

ಮುಂಬರುವ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳದಿ ಗಲ್ಲದ ಹಕ್ಕಿ (Yellow-throated Bulbul) ಫೋಟೋ ತೆಗೆದು eBird checklist ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಮೂದಿಸುವುದು ಒಂದ.

In the coming days, I would like to take a photo of the Yellow-throated Bulbul, which is seen in BR Hills.

9. What is your message for fellow eBirders?

ಪಕ್ಷಿ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮತ್ತು eBird ನಲ್ಲಿ check ಲಿಸ್ಟ್ ಹಾಕಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ ನಂತರದ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ತಜ್ಞರು ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗುತಿದೆ ಇದಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ ಕಾರಣ ಕರ್ತರಾದ Prashanth ಸರ್ kalyan ಸರ್ ರವರಿಗೆ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು .ಮುಂದೊದುದಿನ ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ  ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪಕ್ಷಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಕನಾಗಿರಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

After beginning to use eBird, I have met with several birders and many experts thanks to Prashanth and Kalyan. In the coming days, I would like to be a good/top birder from my district.
