September 2017 eBirding Challenge

We hope that the challenge in August was interesting and you got a chance to explore at least two interesting hotspots. We enter September – truly a month of transition. By the end of this month, the monsoon showers should have left most parts of India and hopefully, seasonal changes will be signalled by the arrival of passage as well as early winter migrants.

Do you know which winter migrants to expect in your patch/region this time of the year? Do check out the eBird Bar Charts to find out!

This is an interesting to track migrants in one’s region and it doesn’t have to be far from one’s house. It could be a singing Greenish Warbler in a neighbourhood park or a Common Sandpiper in a nearby wetland. It is easiest to track these changes if you’re keeping an eye (and a ear) out for the birds around you.

The challenge in September is to upload at least one checklist for every day of the month. Each checklist must contain no-Xs, be of at least 15 minutes duration, and should be effort-based (i.e. Stationary or Travelling).

The Gap-filling Challenge this month (September 2017) is to upload a minimum of 4 checklists of at least 15 minutes duration each from one or more of the target districts. The target districts are the 369 districts that have 30 minutes or less of birding represented on eBird in the month of September of all previous years combined.

You can download the list of target districts in any of the following formats: CSV(9 kb) PDF(85kb)

Please upload all your lists by 5 October 2017 so that we can announce the results the next day.

Here are the general rules of our monthly challenges. And check out the yearlong challenges as well! You can keep track of fresh lists coming in from India at this page.

Important. if you are new to eBird, please read this description first, and do take a look at our quick-start infographic and also the more comprehensive Beginner’s Guide.
