Pacific Golden-Plover

Pacific Golden-Plover (Pluvialis fulva) is an Arctic breeding shorebird that winters in South and Southeast Asia along coastlines and large inland waterbodies.

Possibly due to the various pressures that arise from climate change in its Arctic breeding grounds, this species has undergone staggering declines. Many of its wintering areas now host only a small fraction of its historical abundance.

Pacific Golden-Plover retains some golden colour in its non-breeding plumage, but attains its spectacular golden breeding plumage only in spring just before it departs to the Arctic.

Migration map

This animated migration map was created from observations uploaded to the citizen science platform eBird up until 2020. Where present, the inset graph depicts the seasonal likelihood of finding this species (i.e. the proportion of eBird checklists) within its range in India alone. We are grateful to the many birdwatchers around the world who have enabled the creation of this animation by sharing their observations on eBird.
