Day4 Map

As of now this Pongal Bird Count  (from 15th to 18th January 2016) have yielded 530 lists from 103 birders (+2 group account). Note that there may be several individuals who have not yet uploaded their sightings.

So far 322 species has been recorded  and some interesting records are: Common Buzzard, Sandwich Tern, Great Thick-knee, Black-and-rufous Flycatcher, Black-chinned Laughingthrush, Greater Spotted Eagle, Nilgiri Wood-Pigeon, Red-necked Falcon, Rock Eagle-Owl, Tree Pipit, Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, Blue-throated Flycatcher, Bar-headed Goose, Legge’s Hawk-Eagle, Thick-billed Warbler, Gray-headed Lapwing, Comb Duck, Peregrine Falcon, Western Crowned Leaf Warbler, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Shortwing and Nilgiri Thrush.

The map shows the locations of all lists that have been uploaded until now. The circles are partly transparent, so locations with several lists show a deeper color. Except for Dharmapuri, Karur, Namakkal, Perambalur, Theni  (marked in grey)all the other districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have at least one list.

Day 1&2&3_15&16&17 Jan 2016_

Days 1 – 3 of the Pongal Bird Count have yielded 383 lists from 83 birders (+1 group account), recording 290 species so far.

So far, Puducherry and 24 of the 32 districts of TN (Ariyalur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanniyakumari, Krishnagiri, Madurai, The Nilgiris, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Thoothukkudi, Thiruvallur, Tiruppur, Thiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Viluppuram) have at least one list.  The locations are depicted (Orange-Day1, Blue-Day2, Green-Day3) in the map above. The circles are partly transparent, so locations with several lists show a deeper color.

Some interesting bird species recorded so far: Black-and-rufous Flycatcher, Black-chinned Laughingthrush, Greater Spotted Eagle, Nilgiri Wood-Pigeon, Red-necked Falcon, Rock Eagle-Owl, Tree Pipit, Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, Blue-throated Flycatcher, Bar-headed Goose, Legge’s Hawk-Eagle, Thick-billed Warbler, Gray-headed Lapwing, Comb Duck, Peregrine Falcon, Western Crowned Leaf Warbler, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Shortwing and Nilgiri Thrush.

The first two days of the Pongal Bird Cout have yielded 207 checklists from 59 observers. Lists have come in from 20 of 32 districts of Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Erode, Kancheepuram, Madurai, The Nilgiris, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Thoothukkudi, Thiruvallur, Tiruppur, Thiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore). There are 257 bird species recorded so far. Few interesting records: Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, Blue-throated Flycatcher, Bar-headed Goose, Legge’s Hawk-Eagle, Thick-billed Warbler, Brown wood owl, Gray-headed Lapwing, Comb Duck, Peregrine Falcon, Western Crowned Leaf Warbler, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Shortwing and Nilgiri Thrush.

 

15 Jan, 2230 hrs (Day 1)

Until 22:30 hrs on the day 1 there are 110 checklists have been uploaded, their locations are depicted in the map above. The circles are partially transparent, so locations with several lists show a deeper colour.

Checklists are submitted from 15 districts from 40 observers  (Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Erode, Kancheepuram, The Nilgiris, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Thoothukkudi, Thiruvallur, Thiruvarur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore). Note that there are groups and individuals who may not submitted their lists yet.

The very first list(s) of the day came from Raja Simma Pandiyan (Thanjavur Dt.) and Ganeshwar   S V (Kancheepuram Dt.) There are 184 bird species recorded on the day 1. Few interesting records: Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, Blue-throated Flycatcher, Bar-headed Goose, Legge’s Hawk-Eagle and Thick-billed Warbler.
