Since 2017, Maharashtra Pakshimitra has been celebrating Pakshi Saptah to commemorate the birthdays of two renowned ornithologists from India: Dr. Salim Ali (12 Nov) and Mr. Maruti Chitampalli (5 Nov). After overwhelming participation and enthusiastic response from bird lovers across Maharashtra, the tradition continues in its third year too. All are welcome to get introduced to the world of our feathered friends!

Salim Ali, the “Birdman of India”, was a naturalist and scientist who contributed enormously to Indian ornithology. It is rare to find someone who combined their love for birds with a flair for writing about them. One such person is Maruti Chitampalli, a former Indian Forest Service officer from Maharashtra. Not only is he is an ornithologist and naturalist but also a popular nature writer in Marathi.

These two ornithologists have devoted their lives to birds and are inspirations for many. In their honour, 5 to 12 November is celebrated as Pakshi Saptah in Maharashtra. The weeklong event celebrates their immense contribution to Indian ornithology by spreading the joy of birding and awareness among all. In Maharashtra, many groups organise birding activities, lecture series and discussions about birds and their threatened habitats, their conservation, and their protection.

Here is a set of events planned for the week. If your event is not listed, please email us the details! All the events are open to the public
