Big Bird Day 2014
16 Feb 2014
Big Bird Day is an annual event (started by the Delhibird group; more about the history here) to celebrate the joy of birdwatching. It is a day dedicated to birdwatching and enumerating species seen in a chosen location. In 2013, BBD went truly national with over 160 teams across the country comprising over 1000 birders coming together to celebrate the first pan-India Big Bird Day. This year, we hope to reach out to even more birders.

BBD is fun mixed with some potentially serious business. The fun part is birding without any competition. The serious part is that if 160 (or even more) teams from all over the subcontinent watch birds at 300 locations on the same day, the data becomes very valuable for measuring actual bird diversity of the region. It can form a rich database, especially if accumulated over several seasons/years.
This year, Big Bird Day promises to be even bigger, with support from its collaboration partners WWF, BNHS and Sanctuary Asia. Nearly a hundred teams all across India have registered so far. Many more are expected in the coming weeks leading up to the event on Sunday Feb 16.
