Mark your calendars for Saturday 14 May 2016, and go out birding wherever you are in India for Endemic Bird Day. This is the second year this event has happened, timed to coincide with the Global Big Day, a worldwide effort to document as many species as possible in a single 24-hour period.

In India in May the heat is usually too oppressive to be attempting a “big day”, and overall variety of species is not so high with winter migrants having mostly departed, but it is a very good time to concentrate on resident birds. Of these, endemics are a special focus: read more about our endemic birds and how to take part in Endemic Bird Day.

As part of the build up to 14 May, we will be running the Bird Count India Endemic Bird Quiz! Every few days we will test your knowledge of Indian Subcontinent endemics through maps, audio and bird facts. A prize will be given to the first person drawn at random from all those who get every question correct. The first Endemic Quiz Bird will be posted shortly. You will have 3 days to submit your answer before we publish the next question. The quiz will end just before Endemic Bird Day itself, and the winner announced just afterwards.
