1. Please tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do and where do you live?

My name is Taukeer and I belong to a local community called ‘Van Gujjar’. Many years ago our ancestors used to roam the forests with their cattle. In 2003, we were removed from Rajaji National Park and relocated in Gendikhata Gujjar Basti and Pathri Gujjar Basti. I am now a nature guide in Uttarakhand and together with the Nature Science Initiative (NSI), I conduct research on wildlife and awareness campaigns in rural and urban schools. I and my friends also work together to educate children of those Van Gujjar societies who are still living in the forests.

2. When and how did you get interested in birding?

I grew up in a forest watching animals and insects. I used to look at various birds only by their colours. It was only when I first used a pair of binoculars to see a ‘Red-vented bulbul’, with its short crest and red vent, I realised what a wonderful world is out there.

3. Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

My favourite bird is the Black-throated Tit (Black-throated Bushtit) Aegithalos concinnus. Since I’m scared of ghosts, the face of the Black-throated Tit looks like a ghost to me and hence it is my favourite.

4. Where do you enjoy birding the most?

I like birding everywhere, but at Jhilmil Lake Kanjarvesan Reserve in Haridwar, I enjoy birding the most.

5. Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with? How is birding alone different from birding with others?

I am part of a group called ‘Maee‘. My younger brother and his friends are part of this group and they help us in ‘Van Gujjar’s education programme. The group members are 6th -12th graders and I have taught them all to recognize birds. Now, we all go birding together. I regularly conduct nature walks for various schools. Besides this, I also accompany national and foreign bird watchers and photographers on bird excursions.

Observing birds on your own is quite different than observing with a group. When you are alone, you are able to see the birds calmly and talk to yourself about the identity of difficult birds. You can also listen to the birds more when are you are alone. But the logic you give to each other to identify a bird in a group is a lot of fun in itself, especially with the youth.

6. Anything on the birding bucket list? (Doesn’t have to be a bird, could be a place, witnessing a phenomenon, etc)

Beautiful Nuthatch from this checklist

Although my list is very long, I dream about seeing Sultan TitBeautiful NuthatchAmur Falcon, Heart-spotted WoodpeckerSnowy Owl. I also desire to watch birds in Ladakh, South and East India, Africa and Papua New Guinea.

7. Has eBird changed how you bird? How?

My interest in eBird has increased because it preserves and maintains your data in a well-organized way. eBird acts as your best bird guide as well.

8. Have you set any birding goals for the coming months?

No birding goals as of now as I will continue birding every day, wherever I am. My goal is to increase the interest of bird watching amongst the new youngsters in the coming few months.

9. What is your message for fellow birders?

I would like to give the same message to all bird watchers and photographers that, wherever they are they should bird ethically. Take special care of nature, do not use playback, do not bait and/or feed birds, do not litter the forest with plastic and use as little as possible.
