Birder Profile – Raja Simma Pandiyan

An engineer, a farmer, a birder, and lots more – read on to find out more (all answers in English and Tamil) about Raja Simma Pandiyan and his interests.

1. Please tell us bit about yourself. What do you do and where do you live?

I live in a small town Papanasam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Currently, I practice organic farming. I completed my engineering degree and worked as an IT professional at Infosys for 7 years. During this stint, I got to live in Pune, Chengalpattu, Hyderabad and Denver, USA. Unfortunately, I was not a birder then. Due to the workload in an IT job and the attraction towards organic farming, I quit my job and started farming in my hometown. Apart than birding, I’m also interested in astronomy, history and Tamil literature.

2. When and how did you get interested in Birding?

In April 2013, I happened to read two Tamil books “Mazhai kaalamum kuyilosaiyum” (compiled by S. Theodore Baskaran) and “Paravaigalum Vedanthangalum” (compiled by Perumal Murugan) which are compilations of the writings of naturalist M. Krishnan. These books made me realise that I didn’t even know the names of the birds living around me. Then I began watching the birds which visited the neem tree near my house and started listening to their calls. Even today, I can still feel the thrill of identifying my first bird – a Red-vented Bulbul. From there, my search for birds took me beyond our neem tree.

3. Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

I have many favourite birds – the Blue-tailed Bee-eater for its colours and the way it flies to catch its prey, the Rufous Treepie for its various vocalisations, the Spotted Owlet for its cuteness. The list goes on…

4. Where do you enjoy birding the most?

I enjoy birding wherever I go. Mostly I wander around farmlands, and the irrigational canals and rivers which are prevalent in the Cauvery delta. I have a special liking for wetlands.

5. Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with? How is birding alone different from birding with others?

I go birding alone often. Some of the good things about birding in a group are knowledge sharing and interactions with other birders. When birding alone, on the other hand, we have to be more patient and learn from Mother Nature.

6. Anything on the birding bucket List? (Doesn’t have to be a bird, could be a place, witnessing a phenomena, etc)

At the moment, I wish to travel and explore different places within Tamil Nadu. And then, eventually, to other states – especially in the north-eastern region of India.

7. Has eBird changed how you bird? How?

The first bird Raja indentified was the Red-vented Bulbul. Photo by Albin Jacob.

Yes. In the initial days of my birding, I didn’t keep any bird lists. Only after I began using eBird, I started carrying a notepad and pen while birding. Now I understand how keeping lists regularly gives us an insight into the trends and patterns in bird populations in a given place over a period of time.

8. Have you set any birding goals for the coming months?

I don’t have any particular goals but I wish to bird as much as possible in new places.

9. What is your message for fellow birders?

We all start with birding as a hobby, but it shouldn’t remain only a hobby. We should observe bird habits and their habitats. The hobby of birding should then evolve into an aspiration to conserve wildlife and their habitats.

Congratulations and very Happy that Raja decided to take up farming, despite being a qualified IT professional. Farming has lost ground in many fertile areas. Wish to meet him sometime on my visit to Papanasam to learn more on his farming techniques and do some local birding.
