Birder Profile: Mukesh Dudhwe

1.आप हमें अपने बारे में कुछ बताये, आप कहॉं रहते है और क्या करते हैं?

मेरा नाम मुकेश डुडवे है। मैं वन विभाग में रेंज ऑफिसर हूँ तथा वर्तमान में मेरी पदस्थापना वन परिक्षेत्र अधिकारी मढ़ई/कामती में है। मैं मूल रूप से जिला बड़वानी मध्य प्रदेश का रहने वाला हूँ। वर्तमान में मेरा मुख्यालय सोहागपुर, जिला होशंगाबाद, म. प्र. है। मैं म. प्र. लोक सेवा आयोग से चयनित होकर 6 जुलाई 2009 से वन परिक्षेत्र अधिकारी (फॉरेस्ट रेंजर) के रूप में सेवायें दे रहा हूँ।

2. आपने पक्षियों को देखना या बर्डिंग करना कब और कैसे शुरू किया?

मैं 6 जुलाई 2009 से वन विभाग में हूँ तब से ही बर्डिंग कर रहा हूँ, परन्तु मुझे eBird के बारे में वर्ष 2017 में पता चला तब से मैं बर्डिंग के समय eBird app का उपयोग कर रहा हूँ। जब मैं जंगल जाता था तब मुझे जो भी पक्षी दिखते थे उनके बारे में जानने की कोशिश करता था और मैं उस पक्षी का फ़ोटो ले लेता था तथा घर आकर उसके बारे में और जानकारी प्राप्त करता था, इसी प्रकार धीरे-धीरे मैं पक्षियों के बारे में जानने लग गया। उनका नाम, स्थानीय है या प्रवासी है, वो कहॉं से आते है व कब घोंसला बनाते हैं, और उनका बिहेवियर कैसा है, इसी प्रकार से पक्षियों के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त होती गयी।

3. आपका सबसे पसंदीदा पक्षी कौनसा है? और क्यों?

मेरा सबसे पसंदीदा पक्षी Indian Skimmer है, क्योंकि ये पक्षी हर साल माइग्रेट होकर मढ़ई में आता है तथा नदी में रेतीले टापू पर नेस्टिंग करता है जब भी यह पक्षी मढ़ई में माइग्रेट होकर आता है तो कई बर्ड वाचर दूर-दूर से इस पक्षी को देखने आते हैं और यह पक्षी काफी खूबसूरत दिखता है।

4. बर्डिंग करने के लिये आपकी सबसे पसंदीदा जगह कौन सी है? या आप बर्डिंग करना सबसे ज्यादा कहाँ पसंद करते हैं?

बर्डिंग करने के लिये मेरी सबसे पसंदीदा जगह सतपुड़ा टाइगर रिजर्व है, मैंने अपनी ज़्यादातर बर्डिंग सतपुड़ा टाइगर रिजर्व में ही की है। यहॉं लगभग 300 प्रजाति के स्थानीय व प्रवासी पक्षी पाये जाते हैं। यहाँ की समृद्ध विविधता के कारण मुझे इस जगह बर्डिंग करना अच्छा लगता है।

5. क्या आप किसी साथी या ग्रुप के साथ बर्डिंग करना पसंद करते है? अकेले या किसी के साथ बर्डिंग करने में क्या फर्क है?

हॉं, मैं अपने नेचुरलिस्ट साथियों या ग्रुप के साथ बर्डिंग करता हूँ। मेरे साथ अक्सर श्री अनूप प्रकाश जी तथा विनीत जी भी बर्डिंग करते हैं, और कई बार मैं जब जंगल जाता हूँ तो अकेले भी बर्डिंग करता हूँ, अकेले में बर्डिंग करने से कोई नया पक्षी दिखता है तो उसके बारे में खुद को जानकारी प्राप्त करना रहता है जबकि ग्रुप या साथी के साथ बर्डिंग करने में उस ग्रुप या साथी से उस बर्ड के बारे में बात कर उस पक्षी की अधिक से अधिक जानकारी प्राप्त हो जाती है।

6. भविष्य में बर्डिंग को लेकर क्या आपकी कोई इच्छा है? आप कोई पक्षी देखना चाहते हो या किसी खास जगह पर बर्डिंग करना चाहते हो या पक्षियों से संबंधित कोई घटना देखना चाहते हो?

भविष्य में मैं भारत के बाहर भी बर्डिंग करना चाहता हूँ । जिससे eBird में पक्षियों की प्रजाति की मेरी लाइफ़ लिस्ट में इजाफा हो सके। मैं Pheasant प्रजाति के पक्षी को देखना चाहता हूँ। यह पक्षी हिमालय के क्षेत्र में देखने को मिलता है, इसलिये मेरी इच्छा है कि मैं वहाँ जाकर बर्डिंग करूँ जिससे कि वहाँ के भी पक्षी मेरी लिस्ट में जुड़ जाए।

7. क्या eBird से जुड़ने के बाद आपके बर्डिंग करने के तरीके में कोई बदलाव आये है? हॉं तो हमें उनके बारे में बतायें?

eBird से जुड़ने के बाद मेरे बर्डिंग करने के तरीके में बहुत सारे बदलाव आये है।

eBird से हम बर्ड डाक्यूमेन्टैशन में एक्टिव रूप से जुड़े रहते हैं।
हमें यह आसानी से पता चल जाता है कि आज हमने पक्षियों की कितनी प्रजाति देखी है, उनकी संख्या तथा कब-कब, कौन-कौन से पक्षी देखे इसका पता भी आसानी से लग जाता है। Smart phone हमारे पास हमेशा रहता है इसलिये हम बर्डिंग के समय जब चाहे eBird app पर बर्ड डाक्यूमेन्टैशन कर सकते हैं।
हम यह भी पता कर सकते है कि हमारे द्वारा कब-कब, कौन-कौन से और कितने पक्षी देखे गए हैं तथा हम महीने, साल या किसी भी समय का डाटा देख सकते है।
eBird से हमे किसी जगह पर, कौन-कौन से पक्षियों की प्रजाति मिलती है, वह स्थानीय है या प्रवासी है और प्रवासी है तो कब से कब तक रहता है इसका पता भी आसानी से चल जाता है।
हमे दूसरे देशों के पक्षियों व बर्डिंग हाट्स्पाट की भी जानकारी मिल जाती है, किस देश में, किस प्रदेश में, किस समय, किसी पक्षी को देखा गया यह भी पता चल जाता है। और हम इसी तरह से किसी भी जिले में कौन-कौन लोग बर्डिंग कर रहे हैं की जानकारी भी प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।
इससे यह भी पता चल जाता है कि जितने पक्षियों को पिछले साल देखा गया उतने ही इस बार भी है या उनकी संख्या में कुछ बदलाव हुआ है। और यदि संख्या कम हुई है तो हम उनके कारणों का पता लगाने की कोशिश कर सकते है।
सबसे महत्वपूर्ण की हम eBird के माध्यम से विश्वभर के eBirders से जुड़े रहते हैं।

8. बर्डिंग को लेकर आने वाले कुछ महीनों में आपके कोई लक्ष्य हैं?

आने वाले महीनों में मैं ज्यादा से ज्यादा eBird पर डाक्यूमेन्टैशन करूँगा तथा जिन जगह पर अभी तक बर्डिंग नहीं की है, उन जगहों पर सर्वे कर पक्षियों की लिस्ट में इजाफा करना चाहता हूँ तथा मेरा लक्ष्य सतपुड़ा टाइगर रिजर्व से बाहर दूसरे टाइगर रिजर्व में भी बर्डिंग करना है।

9. आप साथी बर्डर्स को क्या संदेश देना चाहेंगे?

अपने साथी बर्डर्स को मैं यह संदेश देना चाहता हूँ कि वे eBird पर अधिक से अधिक बर्ड डाक्यूमेन्टैशन करें तथा हम जिस भी क्षेत्र में बर्डिंग कर रहे हैं वहॉं के हैबिटैट की जानकारी भी रखें। भौगौलिक स्थिति क्या है तथा वहॉं का जंगल कैसा है, यह भी मालुम होना चाहिए जिससे यह पता चलता है कि किस प्रकार के जंगल में कौन-कौन से पक्षियों की प्रजातियॉं पायी जाती है। इसके अलावा यह भी ध्यान रखने की ज़रूरत है की पक्षियों का आवास कैसा है, कहीं जंगल ख़त्म होने से, अवैध उत्खनन या अन्य वजह से उनका आवास ख़त्म तो नहीं हो रहा है। कई पक्षी कुछ ख़ास जगहों पर ही पाए जाते है ऐसे में उस जगह के हैबिटैट ख़त्म होने से उससे संबंधित प्रजातियाँ भी समाप्त हो सकती है ऐसा प्रतीत हो तो वहाँ के प्रशाशन को इसकी जानकारी दे । मेरे साथी बर्डर्स अपने आस-पास के क्षेत्रों में साल भर में कम से कम 2 बार अन्य साथियों के साथ मिलकर बर्ड सर्वे करे और उसकी जानकारी रखे एवं सोशल मीडिया में भी प्रचार-प्रसार करे, ताकि लोग पक्षियों के बारे में जागरूक हो सके तथा अधिक से अधिक लोगों को यह भी बताये कि हमारे आस-पास पक्षियों के होने से क्या-क्या फायदे होते है। जैसे बहुत सारे पक्षी किसान मित्र होते है जो कीड़े और कीट पतंगों को खाकर फ़सलों को नुक़सान होने से बचाते है। किसानों को इस बारे में भी जागरूक करें कि कीटनाशकों का प्रयोग कम से कम करें, क्योंकि कीटनाशकों का छिड़काव से पक्षियों की प्रजाति नष्ट होती है, किसान जब छिड़काव करता है उस समय कीट, पतंगों को पक्षी खा लेते है तो पक्षी मर जाते है और इसके अलावा कीटनाशकों से पक्षियों के अंडों का कवच कमजोर हो जाता है जिससे बहुत सारे अंडों से बच्चे नहीं निकल पाते है। अक्सर यह देखने में आता है कि लोग अंधविश्वास एवं अपने स्वार्थ के कारण पक्षियों का व्यापार करते हैं जिन्हें रोकना भी अतिआवश्यक है, ऐसी कोई जानकारी होने पर वन विभाग एवं पुलिस विभाग को अवश्य देवें तथा लोगों का अंधविश्वास दूर करने हेतु जागरूक करें और इसे रोकने के लिये हर संभव प्रयास करे।

1. Please tell us something about yourself, where do you live and what do you do.

My name is Mukesh Dudhwe. I am a Range forest officer (RFO) with the Forest Department and am currently posted in Madhai/Kaamti. My native place is Badhwani, Madhya Pradesh. I was selected from Madhya Pradesh public service commission on 6 July 2009 and since then have held the post of a RFO

2. When and how did you get interested in birding?

I had joined the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department on 6th July 2009. Since then I have been pursuing bird watching. But in 2017 I got to know about eBird, and since then I have been using the eBird app. I learned more about birds during my visits to the forest. Whenever I saw a bird, I would take a photo of the bird and come home and try to find more information about it. This way I gradually learned more about the birds around me. Their name, whether they are local or migrant, where do they come from, when do they build a nest, how is their behavior-all these questions intrigued me, and that’s how I started learning more about birds.

3. Do you have a favourite bird or birds? Why is it/are they your favourite?

My favourite bird is the Indian Skimmer. because it migrates every year to nest on the sandy islands of the rivers. During its migratory season, bird watchers from far and wide travel to Madhai to see this beautiful bird.

4. Where do you enjoy birding the most?

I have done most of my birding in the Satpura Tiger Reserve, and it is my favourite place for bird watching. Around 300 species of resident and migratory birds are found here! Due to the rich biodiversity of this region, I enjoy birding in the Satpuras.

5. Do you have a birding partner or a group you enjoy birding with?

Yes, I often go birding with a naturalist colleague or in a group. Often Mr. Anup Prakash and Mr. Vineet accompany me during my birding trips, and sometimes I am on my own. When I am alone and I see a bird, I have to find all the information about that bird on my own. Whereas, when birding in a group or with a partner, it is easier to get more information about that bird as someone in the group would know more about the bird.

6. Anything on the birding bucket list? (Doesn’t have to be a bird, could be a place, witnessing a phenomenon, etc)

In the future, I would like to go for birding trips outside India. This will help to increase my list of species of birds in eBird. Also, I want to see all the pheasant species found in the Himalayan region. If I get to travel there, I hope to see add them to my life list.

7. Has eBird changed how you bird? How?

There have been many changes in the way I do birding after joining eBird.

With eBird, we are actively involved in bird documentation.
We easily get to know how many species of birds we have seen today along with their numbers and location. Since in today’s times’ smartphones are always with us, we can easily document the birds seen on the eBird app from anywhere.
We can also find out when which species, and how many birds have been documented by us and it is easy to sort the data based on the month and year.
From eBird, we can find information about which bird species are found in a particular location, whether it is local or migratory, and for how long it has been observed.
We also get information about birds and birding hotspots from other countries. We can see the information of where a bird has been recorded- country, state, as well as the time of observation. And in the same way, we can also get information about the people who are birding in any district.
It also shows if there has been any change in the bird species numbers compared to data from previous years. And if the number is reduced, we can try to find out the reason for the same.
The most important thing I feel is that through eBird we can stay connected to the entire community of eBirders.

8. Have you set any birding goals for the coming months?

In the coming months, I will do more and more documentation on eBird and I want to increase the number of birds on my list by surveying the places from where data is not available. My goal is also to do birding in other tiger reserves outside the Satpuras.

9. What is your message for fellow birders?

I want to send this message to my fellow birders that they should do as much bird documentation on eBird as possible and also keep a check on the habitat of the area in which we are birding. It is important information to know the geographical location and the forest type, so we would know the species of birds found in a particular geographical region. Apart from this, it is also necessary to keep a note on any disturbances seen during birding such as illegal excavation, deforestation, etc. Some birds are endemic to a region, and if the habitat is lost, we can lose the species too. Hence it is important to keep the local administration updated regarding any habitat destruction. My fellow birders survey the bird in their surrounding areas at least twice a year and spread this information on social media to create awareness. Likewise, one should create awareness about the benefits of birds. Like many birds are friends of the farmers as they eat harmful insects and insect mites and protect crops from damage. I feel it is important to make our farmers aware of the harmful impact of pesticides on birds. Birds can die if they eat an infected insect, while pesticides weaken the eggshells of birds, due to which sometimes eggs are unable to hatch. It is sad to see when people trade birds due to superstition and their selfish desires, which needs to be stopped. If there is any such information, then make sure the forest department and the police department is informed. Every birder should make an effort to create awareness and protect our birds.
